So, you have dreams of starting a successful blogging website?
That’s fantastic. Nowadays, you don’t even need to have any technical knowledge to get started. You don’t need to learn HTML, CSS, Python, or any other programming language used to get your website up and running. Besides, who has time to spend months learning about the programs that go into making a website when all you really want is a freaking website without all the hassle? Well, the good news is that you don’t need to be a computer whiz to build a website. There are companies that make the process of creating a website simple and easy. These companies have already preprogrammed website creating software into their system so that all you have to do is pick a theme and start designing a killer website.
In this post, I will walk you through the basic steps needed to build your website.
5 steps to starting a successful blogging website
Building your own website can be done in 5 steps. If you follow these steps, your website can be up and running in less than two hours.
The 5 steps to building a website are:

- Choose which web host you prefer
- Secure a domain name for your website
- Design your website
- Start posting valuable content based on your blogging niche
Ok, now that I’ve laid out the 5 steps to building a website for your blog, let’s discuss the steps in more detail.
Step 1: Choose which blogging platform you prefer
Choosing a blogging platform is the very first step you need to take. There are many different platforms to choose from. The three most popular blogging platforms are WordPress, Tumblr, and Blogger. The majority of the platforms have very limited designs and layouts to choose from. For this reason, WordPress is the platform that I personally use and recommend.
WordPress is the largest and most popular blogging platform available today. Some of the world’s largest brands and industries use WordPress as their platform of choice, such as IBM, CNN, Spotify, etc.
WordPress has numerous plugins, themes, and layouts. There are a countless number of ways to design your blog with WordPress. WordPress is also super easy to set up and it’s also free to use.
Step 2: Choose which web host you prefer
Choosing a web host is the second step you need to take. A web host is a virtual storage place where your blog will live on the internet. There are hundreds of web hosting services available, but the web hosting service I highly recommend is Hostgator. I recommend Hostgator because their service is fast and reliable and they guarantee a 99.9% uptime. Hostgator also offers great customer service and they are a well-known company to do business with.
Step 3: Secure a domain name for your blogging website
Getting a domain name can be done at the same place that you get your web hosting. Try to keep your domain name anywhere between 1 to 3 words long. Short domain names are better because they are easy to type and easy to remember. When trying to find a domain name, it may seem like all of the “good” domain names are already taken so try to be a bit creative.
It is also not recommended to use hyphens or numbers in domain names as this can make it more difficult for users of the website to remember or type the domain name. Using hyphens and numbers in domain names can also make your website rank poorly in the google search engine.
The Domainr website is a great way to determine the availability of a domain name. You don’t actually need to buy your domain name from this service. However, this service does make it easier to determine the availability beforehand. After you have determined the availability, you can go to the domain registration service of your choice and buy your domain there.
Step 4: Design your blog
Designing your blog is the fun part and also the most difficult. First impressions count so you’ll really want to think about the design of your blog. WordPress has many free themes to choose from; however, premium themes are recommended for professional bloggers.
Premium themes may cost you money to buy, but they will be fast and secure. Premium themes will also be responsive, which means that the layout will be adjusted based on the size of the screen. Responsive themes are designed for mobile users, tablet users, as well as desktop users. Responsive themes are important because a significant amount of traffic is generated from handheld devices, such as mobile phones and tablets. Mobile friendly websites also rank better in Google’s mobile search engine.

While it is possible to design the blog 100% yourself from start to finish, you may want to consider the option of hiring a designer to create a custom design for your blog. Step 5: Start posting valuable content based on your blogging niche
Hopefully, you have your website up and running by now. Now that you have a website, it’s time to start posting content. There are two types of content that you are able to write in WordPress – pages and posts.
Pages are used to present information about yourself and your website. Pages are less dependent on time. In other words, pages are static. Some common examples of pages include about, contact, and disclaimer page. After the home page, the very next page should be the “About” page. This is where you describe yourself and what your website is about.
Posts will go under its own page, typically titled “Blog.” This page will not be static because it will be constantly updated with your blog posts. Each post published will show the publication date. Each post will also have comments enabled at the bottom, which will allow readers to comment on your post. You can disable comments on your website; however, this is not recommended because comments are a great way to get feedback from the users of your website.
