When you tell someone that you want to start an online blogging business for a living, they may tell you that blogging is a waste of time and that there’s no way you’ll generate enough income to support yourself and your family.
There are always going to be those naysayers that tell you that making a living blogging is impossible. They tell you this because they don’t know anyone making it happen.
These naysayers could be the reason you refuse to start a blog in the first place. You believe them and their words hold you back from starting a blogging business even though that is your dream job.
If this is the case, don’t tell anybody that you plan on starting a blog (accept maybe your closest family members) until you get your first paycheck from blogging. After you get your first paycheck, you can show it off to your friends and family members and brag about your awesome work from home job.
It may take a lot of time and dedication for you to generate enough income to support yourself and your family, but making a living blogging is not impossible. If you want your blog to succeed, you’re going to have to get ready to work hard for the first few years. After the first few years, you can ease up a little bit.
Starting a blog can be a great way to generate long term income. Beginner bloggers often forget that there’s a lot more to starting a blog then just sitting down and writing. You also have to develop a strategy on how to market your blog. You can’t just start a blog, wait it out, and expect people to find your blog. It’s not like your blog will automatically end up on the first page of Google. That, in itself, will require extra effort as you learn about how Google’s algorithm works.
There are many fishes in the sea, so how do you get yourself to stand out among the hundreds of thousands of blogs on the internet? How do you get yourself to stand out among the hundreds of new blogs being created each and every day?
By no means is blogging a get-rich-quick scheme. If that is what you’re looking for, then blogging is not for you. You shouldn’t start blogging for the sole purpose of earning money. You should start blogging because you want to have a voice and you want to make a difference in people’s lives.
Together, we bloggers can and will change the world for the better. I do what I do because I want to encourage aspiring bloggers to start a blog. I also want to encourage aspiring bloggers to use the power of the written word to make a difference in the world. This world needs change and it is up to us to make that happen.
In this blog post, I will be shedding some light on why you should start an online blogging business by listing 5 reasons why you should start today.
5 Reasons to Start an Online Blogging Business
Do you ever wonder why you put up with your current 9-5 job or why you never decided to follow your dreams and pursue your passion? If you answered yes, then starting an online business might just be the solution you are looking for. Stop waiting for opportunity to come knocking on your door and just create the opportunity for yourself. Anyone can make money online with the help of an internet connection and a laptop. Getting your online business up and running is a lot easier than you might think and it comes with many benefits. There are 5 reasons to start an online blogging business today.
Reason #1: The startup costs for an online business are low
When you have an online business, you don’t have to pay for rent, physical products, or employee salaries. The only required blogging expenses are a premium WordPress theme, a domain name, a hosting service, and an email marketing service.
The WordPress theme that I use to run my website is Divi by Elegant Themes. The Lifetime access plan to Elegant Themes costs only $249, which is actually pretty cheap for what you get. If you want to learn more about why you should get a membership with Elegant Themes, please read Elegant Themes Review 2017.
You can get your domain name and hosting service from Hostgator starting at just $3.95/month. Hostgator offers 3 plans to choose from: a hatchling plan, a baby plan, and a business plan. If you plan on having only one domain, you should start with the hatchling plan. If you plan on having more than one domain, you should get the baby plan or the business plan.
An email marketing service is a must if you want your website to be successful. The email marketing service that I recommend is ConvertKit, which starts at just $29/month. An email marketing service is used to build the number of subscribers to your email list. An email marketing service is a great way to convert abandoning visitors into customers. Without a service like this, someone may visit your blog once and then never visit again. Still not sure if ConvertKit is right for you? You can read my unbiased review of ConvertKit to find out why it is the best email marketing tool for bloggers and online entrepreneurs.
Even if you decide to invest in other tools that may make your online business run smoother, the overall investment will still be much less than a business who has a physical presence offline.
A successful online business can be up and running in less than $300. After your online business has been setup, the cost of maintaining your online business will be less than $40 per month. Now, compare this price to the price of having a business with an on-site location. If you have a business with an on-site location, the upfront cost will be $100,000 or more. With an on-site location, you also need to worry about managing your inventory and paying for the other expenses associated with your business, such as employee salaries and utility bills. That’s a pretty big investment to make for a business that may or may not succeed.
Reason #2: An online business can increase your earning potential
If you work a 9-5 job, the amount of money you earn is limited by your field and your experience. For instance, if you have 10 years of experience as a secretary, you still won’t be able to earn the same amount of money as an investment banker. However, with an online business, the sky really is the limit.
If you have already created one product and started selling it, you can create 10 more and start selling those. There is no limit to what you can do with an online business. If you wanted to, you can even expand on your business in multiple ways. For instance, you can become an affiliate marketer or start offering your own services to the visitors of your website.
Reason #3: An online business gives you job security
When you ask people what they think about starting an online blogging business, they may reply by saying it’s too risky and most of the online blogging businesses fail anyway. Most online blogging businesses fail because of a lack of dedication, but starting an online blogging business is a very low risk opportunity. Starting an online business is the most secure job you can have. You can’t depend on your employer to employ you forever. If you are working for somebody else, you never know when you’ll lose or get laid off from your job and you constantly have to worry about satisfying your employer just so that you can keep your income flowing. This doesn’t sound like job security to me.
What would happen to your job if another great recession hit in the near future? Do you have another source of income to rely on or will you be too stressed looking for another job when nobody will be hiring? An online business can provide you with an additional source of income or even a full time income. You have to be the one to create job security for yourself because you are the only one you can trust to do that.
These are tough times we live in. As more and more robots continue to replace humans in the workplace, many more people will lose their 9-5 jobs and the competition will be even more fierce. Despite this, one thing is certain: the internet is here to stay and it isn’t going anywhere.
Reason #4: An online business is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week
If you have a business with an on-site location, your business will be open for a limited time each day. An online business, on the other hand, will be open all day and all night for 365 days a year. That means you can be making money while you sleep or even when you’re vacationing.
Can you imagine waking up to see the number of people that have bought something through your website? This is way better than a typical 9-5 job. Your income isn’t dependent on the number of hours you work. You can get paid every hour of every day. The sky is the limit.
Reason #5: Starting an online business gives you freedom
Tell me if this situation sounds familiar. You wake up at 6 am, follow your morning routine, and then head to the job you loathe. You get to work and take orders from your boss. You’re impatiently counting every minute and waiting until 5 pm just to be released from work. You can’t take a holiday break unless your boss gives you permission. This is your life each and every week. Five days out of the week, you wake up and follow the same path to live the same day. In the land of the free, home of the brave, is this what it means to be free? This doesn’t sound like living and it certainly doesn’t sound like freedom.
Today, our days are scheduled but they don’t have to be if you are your own boss working from your home office. You can do the things that matter most like spending time with your family or vacationing whenever you please. You can set your own hours and work whenever you choose. Now, this is what I call freedom.
When Is the Right Time to Start?
‘Ready, Fire, Aim.’
This is the entrepreneurial approach you need to follow when starting an online business. People who follow the ‘Ready, Aim, Fire’ approach spend their time questioning too many things and never actually get started with building their online business. They want to start an online business but they spend all of their time thinking
- What if my online business fails?
- What if nobody visits my website?
- What if people think my idea is dumb?
- What if I don’t generate enough income to support myself or my family?
You can’t spend all of your time aiming at the right target. If you do, the chances are high that you may never fire (or you may fire too late). You need to dive in right now and you can always make adjustments or modifications later. There is always space for improvement after everything is in place and running.
You will never know everything there is to know about starting an online business until you actually start it. You can watch all the YouTube videos there are that explain how to start, but you are never going to learn until you start doing it yourself.
If you want to start an online business, now is the time to take action. Why wait when so many people are already making it happen successfully? You could be next.
